焰 = 火 + 臽 : Maud Younger (y) sets up a pitfall (臽) in the anthill's bathroom (an4). She arranges a few chemicals so that should a person fall into the trap, the chemicals will ignite a terrible fire (火) with a blue flame (焰).

炎 = 火 : Mnemonic symbol: As I just learned "itis" is the feeling you get after eating too much.

炎 = 火 : Maud Younger ate too much just inside anthill. She's sleeping so hard that she doesn't even wake up from the fire which is spreading fast.

臽 = ⺈ + 臼 : Marie Curie (xi) wants to catch the crane (⺈) and set up a trap (臽) in the anthill's bathroom (an4). She prepares a sling trap (臽) and places a mortar (臼) with some food in the middle of the sling, and soon she will catch the crane.
